Harry Potter London Premiere - my thoughts

I was incredibly happy to tune into the Harry Potter live premiere. These books and movies have been apart of my life since I was 12, which is nearly 12 years ago (I turn 24 in August). I have been to countless midnight book releases, midnight movie showings, collected the books in both paperback and hardcover, have harry potter figures, lots of HP tshirts, cosplayed from the books, wrote HP fanfic, shipped characters that shouldnt have been shipped, followed every step Dan, Emma, and Rupert have taken in their careers, collected all the movies on DVD, visited Wizarding World of Harry Potter…

ETC ETC ETC

I’m not trying to make it seem like i’m the BIGGEST Harry Potter fan (as there is a video on youtube of the biggest fan that begs to differ), I am just trying to show how this series has been in my life and I love it. The books and its wonderful author have been an inspiration in my own writing and I aspire to create something as worthwhile as this. Because its not really about all the money that has been made, but about the passion the series ignites in its fans. The appreciate they all have for the series. The love. ~by ButerflySamurai

Three "Hobbit" production images

Finally, there is proof that The Hobbit is happening.

Entertainment Weekly published three photos of Peter Jackson's upcoming prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The issue of EW releases tomorrow, June 24, and I will surely be picking it up.

Although we have to wait over a year for the movie, with a release date of December 12, 2012 - I am more excited about this movie then I was of the epic length LOTR trilogy. The Hobbit was a book shoved down my throat in both high school and on my journey as a English major in college.

More about the fantasy epic can be found here

AN UPDATE

I love movies. There is just sheer joy when I sit down in a darkened theater, bucket of popcorn balanced on my lap. Preview trailers start rolling and I immediately sit in awe watching the moving pictures on the screen.

With saying that, I love writing about movies. Love sharing my opinions on them. Love reliving what I watched through the words I weave.

However lately I have been feeling detached from movies which is evident in the fact that the last movie I wrote about was nearly two months ago. I have seen a few movies since then, but my race to get to the theaters to watch this movies before others is always met with disdain.

Summer movies are all about getting to the movies and seeing them first. With so many franchise movies, sequels, and what I affectionately called "Geek Flicks", many movie goers are attending these movies at midnight showings or are even lucky enough to find advance showings (i.e. Super 8 had many "secret screenings" prior to the movie). What good is my "review" if its very late after the fact?

I have seen Thor, Xmen First Class, Jumping the Broom, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Super 8 - all summer movies. I have yet to write about any of them as I saw them far after their release date. Typically a week. Many people rush off to midnight showings of these movies which I am sure will happen again this week as Green Lantern opens.

Getting to advance or midnight showings for me is difficult. These theaters are very far from me, distance wise.

I feel like I'm failing as a journalist in every aspect - gaming, movies, or otherwise. I feel like my career can not go any further without the proper ways of getting my writing out there.

Those ways, however, are not known to me.

As i go forth and attempt to gain readership and publication, I hope to start updating my blog more or atleast trying to create a website to showcase my writing. Somewhere - someplace - someone is going to want to publish my work. Someone is going to want to help me share my love.

Adapt or Die - Hanna is a sleeper hit *no spoilers*

Hanna Pictures, Images and Photos

“I just missed your heart.”

Hanna was a pretty excellent movie.

Ok, review done.

Seriously though, Hanna was a sleeper hit. Going in with no expectations, I was completely immersed in the film. The plot moved along well enough to keep me interested - not laying all it’s cards on the table and revealing things throughout the entire film. For those that think story does not matter in a movie, this movie completely debunks that statement. The story was simple enough to understand, but the way it was told was like slowly pouring water into a glass. Only when it was full did the movie end. Even after the credits start rolling, you wonder more about what the story would have to offer. That was perhaps one of my gripes with the film, the fact it ended on a climatic scene, but the arrival to the scene was amazing. It’s just like they always say - “it’s the journey, not the destination.”

Hanna, played by a great Saoirse Ronan, grew up in the wilds with her ex-CIA father, played by an incredibly hot Eric Bana, and was trained to be an expert assassin/badass. The antagonist is a stunning Cate Blanchett, who is as ruthless in her mission.

Imagery played an important role in the movie as well. Scenery and settings had as much personality as the people on the screen. From the snowy landscape of the Artic Circle to the deserts of Morocco to an abandoned theme park in Germany, all the areas of the movie were beautiful with a lasting appeal on me. I immensely loved the haunting abandoned amusement park with its deconstructed rides, paint fading away from years of deterioration and surrounded by unkempt lawns.

This movie was not all about brilliant story and amazing settings. Although action was sparse, the fights and action sequences were very well done. There was no defying logic and death defying stunts used in this movie. It was just straight-forward, very realistic fighting that would probably be done by these agents in real life. It definitely grounded the movie into the real world instead of taking the audience out of it.

No good movie is without a few problems however. With Hanna it was mostly technical problems having nothing to do with the actually story itself. Some of the camera techniques used were unnecessary and disorienting. Every time Hanna was being chased, they decided to do a weird camera technique that did not work well and took me out of the movie - whether it be a spinning or shaky cam technique.

Hanna is certainly worth checking out if you like more story-driven films. Amidst all the sequels and adaptations, this is a shining gem.

cowardly fools

One of the things I personally think is wrong with the anime/cosplay community is that they always want to hide behind an anonymous tag to get their point across to someone.

The above picture is a screencap from my formspring. This only bothers me because this person is probably on my friends list on Facebook. What. The. Fuck. You can be on my Facebook, on my FRIEND'S LIST nonetheless, and have to hide behind a grayface to say what you need to say to me? That's what angers me, not what was said.

I complain because people like THIS exist a dime a dozen in this hobby and make it difficult for us casual people to even remotely continue to enjoy it when they're incessantly trolling or bitching at others when they need to worry about their own damn selves. Until they pulling money out of their damn pocket to buy my wigs, fabric, and other things then they just need to shut the fuck up. Until they're paying for my hotel and travel expenses then they need to shut the fuck up. Until they stop hiding behind being anonymous on the fucking internet then they need to shut the fuck up.

Swords, Sorcery, and Sex - Camelot comes to Starz

Photobucket

Whoa.

I was not expecting to come home, plop down in front of the TV and watch Camelot tonight. Although I had interest in the series, I had completely forgot that the new Starz series premiered tonight. Lucky for me, the television was on Starz and a crawling scroll informed me that - indeed - Camelot was going to be on tonight.

Lucky, lucky me.

Highly impressed with the show, Camelot is certainly a show that I will continue watching during it's duration. And already contemplating buying a season boxset in the future. Dish Network has generously given their customers a free year of Starz so we ditched HBO in lieu of Starz...and I couldn't be happier even with the looming fourth season of True Blood (which I may or may not watch. Last season bored me.)

Taken from the Starz Website:

"In the wake of King Uther’s sudden death, chaos threatens to engulf Britain. When the sorcerer Merlin has visions of a dark future, he installs the young and impetuous Arthur, Uther’s unknown son and heir, who has been raised from birth as a commoner. But Arthur’s cold and ambitious half sister Morgan will fight him to the bitter end, summoning unnatural forces to claim the crown in this epic battle for control. These are dark times indeed for the new king, with Guinevere being the only shining light in Arthur’s harsh world. Faced with profound moral decisions, and the challenge of uniting a kingdom broken by war and steeped in deception, Arthur will be tested beyond imagination. Forget
everything you think you know…this is the story of Camelot that
has never been told before."

Incredibly stunning, the world that they inhabit is beautiful. It was filmed primarily in Ireland with bright green scenery and brilliant waterfalls.

I knew very little about the cast prior to watching the premier. It was certainly time to do a little digging after watching their amazing performances. (VERY AMAZING. I was blown away!) King Arthur is played by Jamie Campbell Bower who has appeared in such films as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and The Twilight Sage: New Moon. Whether you a Twilighter or a Potterhead, the franchises are huge enough for everyone to know it. Although Bower had minor roles in the two wildly popular YA book adaptions, he will be returning in all the final films for the series'.

Staring opposite of him as his step sister, Eva Green plays Morgan. Ruthless. Ambitious. Morgan is certainly a force to be reckoned with. Green has appeared and starred in such films as The Golden Compass, Casino Royale and Kingdom of Heaven.

As the CEO of Starz Chris Albrecht said "The story of Arthur isn't history, it's mythology, and Camelot isn't a place but an idea of hope that has resonated at different times throughout history." This ten-episode series - with hopefully more seasons to follow - is a creative re-imagining of the tale, taking it and realistically redefining it expertly. I am looking forward to seeing more of this very adult, very dark, and very real tale.

Sucker Punch Animated Shorts - Move Over Animatrix...or not!

Instead of linking all three of these my Facebook page (and continuously spamming everyone that has friended me over there), I compiled all three animated shorts into this blog entry. Now I can talk about them as well as drool over them.

Three animated shorts have popped up today to accompany Sucker Punch, which releases tomorrow March the 25th.

While the source where I found the shorts recommends them for viewing after the movie, I could not help but to view them prior. I, of course, am ready for my Sucker Punch fix despite all the grueling and horrible reviews floating around about it. After waiting on a movie for a year or so, I will watch everything pertaining to it and defend it in anyway possible.

After watching the three shorts, I don't think viewing the movie first is absolutely necessary. If you've seen the trailer a couple of times (or a couple hundred like myself) then each of these shorts adds to familiar elements that are in the trailers. They do not spoil anything about the plot - or lack thereof according to reviewers - about the movie. If anything, they just try to add on to the portions of the movie and may enhance the viewing of it, considering these little back stories will not be in the feature length film.

Each short takes place in a different level of Baby Doll's mind - ala Inception, but probably not as good. Having not seen the movie as of yet, I am unsure if the level of her imagination (minus the Brothel of course) is the correct order the videos are in, but I managed to put them in the order other sources have them in.

Animatrix is one of my favorite things on this planet! It was such a successful addition to the Matrix trilogy and is better to me then one of the movies in the trilogy. Animatrix utilized different directors and art forms for the majority of its animation which is something these Sucker Punch shorts did not do, but I really enjoyed this shorts. I think they all evoked the same emotion from me and were more similar then they are different, which does not put it on the level of the Animatrix as an animated accompaniment to a film. I found them enjoyable nonetheless.

the "G" word

During my creative writing courses in college, we weren't able to say or write the "G" word.
Genre.

No matter how my distinguished professors viewed genre, it exists far more then anything when it comes to entertainment. This must fall into a certain category and individuals choose which category they like the most. Or love.

With fiction, I typically write fantasy. I choose to read young adult. With fanfiction, I always just read smut for some odd reason.

With movies, however, I only want to see action movies in the theatre. I do not know why, but I will rush to the theatre to see something action related. Perhaps they hold my attention more then any other genre. And when sitting in a theatre for hours, you definently want something that is going to keep your butt in the seat.

This morning I had a sudden realization of another genre I am particular fond of. Psychological films. I love for a movie to toy with my mind, twist so that I have no idea what is going on in the film. I like when risks are taken with the movie - where the story does not necessarily have to be linear for me to enjoy it. I love in media res. I love flashbacks. I love foreshadowing. I love all these elements that confuse audiences or warrent multiple viewings for people to completely grasp the entirety of the concept of the movie.

I watched Vanilla Sky for the first time this morning. I was blown away with how into the movie I was, unable to discern what was truly going on. When the revelation happened at the end, i wasn't disappointed and it also wasn't something i could have guessed from the previous events in the movie. I loved the film and vs not believe it took me so long to finally watch it.

So the G word leads me to other movies that I will probably love. It certainly makes it easier to wade through all the movies that exist.

Coming Soon 3/11 - Red Riding Hood, Mars Needs Moms, Battle:LA

Photobucket

This weekend we have three movies, two about aliens and one about the color red.

Red Riding Hood stars Amanda Seyfield and Gary Oldman and appears to be a gritty, dark, and twisted version of the classic fairy tale. From the trailer, the movie seems absolute gorgeous in my opinion. I love the usage of the "red hood", how it is always the brightest color and juxtaposed against the surrounds - especially the snow scene where it is a brilliant red spot and almost symbolizing a loss of purity. The movie seems to be taking on the sexual awakening analysis of the old story and throws in the werewolf. The trailer seems a hodge podge of about three storylines and I'm interested to see how they merge together.

Mars Needs Mom is a Disney movie with Seth Green voicing Milo, a young boy who must save his mother who has been abducted by aliens to raise Martian children. This animated film is going to have to compete against Rango, which released last weekend, and seems to be a pretty hilarious and standard Disney movie. It seems quite entertaining and would be perfect to take children to see.

Battle:Los Angeles is a movie I have wanted to see for a very long time, ever since I first saw a teaser trailer. Alien invasion movies are some of my favorite to see and Battle:La's trailer is really good for a trailer. The concept is, of course, simple. Aliens are attacking Earth to steal it's resources and will destroy all human kind to do so. Michelle Rodriguez is in the film and I am a huge fan of hers. Explosive and riveting, Battle:LA is sure to be better then the last alien invasion film, Skyline, which was highly disappointing. Whether humans win or lose, Battle:LA is a must see this weekend.

Here is an interview from Attack of the Show with Rodriguez. She is certainly a very intelligent woman and talented actress.

Coming This Weekend - Beastly, The Adjustment Bureau

A new segment here on The Cinema Diva will be choosing a movie that releases each weekend...and talking about what I think about it. It will typically be a movie that I see incessantly advertised on the television and such.

One such movie is the one I will be discussing today - Beastly.

I first saw the trailer for Beastly sometime last year. This modern day Beauty and the Beast tale was, well, not really catching my attention. I get the concept and I love when people put twists on old stories that I love (that even influences my own writing a majority of the time), but the trailer was not really catching my attention like it probably should have. The entire thing seemed a bit cliche and predictable. The above trailer has the movie releasing this summer, but, as we know, it release March 4. Perhaps those high in the cinema food chain knew this movie would not be able to go against other summer juggernauts.

The more I watch the trailer, the more the movie tends to grow on me. I can not see myself going to actually pay to see this movie, but it is certainly something that I will probably check out in the future - possibly becoming one of those romance guilty pleasures I normally have.

So, I will pass on seeing this in the theaters, but can not wait for a DVD.

Another movie releasing March 4 is The Adjustment Bureau. This is more my speed when it comes to what I watch in theaters. The only thing I don't seem to like from the trailer is the little love story that seems to be going on. Why do movies always have to throw in a sub plot? This movie is way more deeper then that (or so I have observed from the trailer) and Matt Damon should be more worried about these bad ass guys in fedoras then some girl. The Adjustment Bureau seems like it will be attempting to get audiences to question their existence and whether something is controlling it - in a literal or theological sense. It also seems like a "What Would You Do" movie - what would you do if you found out about the Bureau? I would question them immensely about my plan although I am sure they would not tell me one word.

Rumor after Rumor - More Dark Knight Returns rumors

I love rumors as much as anyone - the anticipation of whether or not they will come true, the speculation fans can do across the internet, etc. However, too many rumors can ruin a good thing.

Last year The Dark Knight Returns, the ending to Christopher Nolan's amazing Batman trilogy, was announced and slated for a release in 2012. Since then, there have been many rumors concerning what Nolan can possibly do with the series despite that filming does not begin until May. The only solid news anyone has ever received is the title and that Tom Hardy will play Bane while, surprisingly, Anne Hathaway will play either Selina Kyle or Catwoman (NOTE: I could go on and on about how I feel like Hathaway's character is Selina Kyle and not a fully realized Catwoman, but we will save that for another time)

Joesph Gordan Levitt is supposedly going to star in the movie as well. Rumors have spread about who he will be playing ranging from the Riddler to Robin to Alberto Falcone.

Marion Cotillard is now rumored to be playing Talia Al'Ghul who, as we all should know, is the daughter of Raj Al'Ghul - the villain in Batman Begins.

While that last rumor would allow the series to come full circle, it also would make The Dark Knight seem like just an out of place sequel. Nolan is, in my fangirl opinion, an amazing director. But even I think handling four villains in one movie would be incredibly difficult, if they were fully fleshed out characters. Because Nolan would also, of course, have to wrap up story lines of several characters already established in the series.

Until I sit down in a theater chair and start to watch what will hopefully be a magnificent film and wrap up to some of my favorite movies, I will no longer pay attention to all these rumors.

Oscar Recap

I look forward to the Academy Awards every year. It is the Superbowl for Movie Buffs, as someone put it ever so nicely on Twitter. However, I do think this particular award's show - and many awards shows in general - are quite predictable. After months of back-room talk about whose nominated (and isn't in Nolan's case), conclusions start to be drawn far before the award's show as to who will take home the little golden man.

For the most part, I guessed most of the winners. Only a couple of categories surprised me and only two winners absolutely made me cheer in my seat. Even still, I love this awards show. It may not be as outlandish as other shows (i'm looking at you MTV movie Awards) but it is still a great way to celebrate film.

Here are the winners:
Best Picture - The King's Speech *predictable win in my opinion...and not the film i would have personally chosen

Actor in a Leading Role - Colin Firth "The King's Speech" *again, quite predictable. I was rooting for Esienberg or Franco, however.

Actor in a Supporting Role - Christan Bale "The Fighter" *congrats, Bale! Well deserved!

Actress in a Leading Role - Natalie Portman "Black Swan" *predictable win, but very deserved! I loved her in that role. Also, she looked amazing pregnant despite what a lot of people are saying. The dress was great for her baby bump.

Actress in a Supporting Role - Melissa Leo "The Fighter" *her acceptance was a wee bit wacky...

Animated Feature Film - Toy Story 3 *I loved this movie. It made me cry and think about my childhood. But...I was secretly rooting for How To Train Your Dragon in hopes of the biggest upset in all of Oscar history to happen. Alas, it did not.

Art Direction - Alice in Wonderland *I was not even aware that Harry Potter had been nominated. Now i am wishing it would have AT LEAST gotten this award just because i'm a fan. Alice is quite deserving, however.

Cinematography - Inception *DAMN RIGHT!

Costume Design - Alice in Wonderland *DAMN RIGHT AGAIN

Directing - Tom Hooper "The King's Speech" *There is a certain lack of Nolan in this category...Anyway, I am not surprised by the winner, but still a little taken aback considering the others that were nominated (oh, and the lack of Nolan. That's surprising...Did i mention that already?) Certainly the Coen Brothers are fantastic and even though i am not the biggest fan of The Social Network, Fincer did a great job with it. AND ARONOSKY IS JUST WOW. Oh, and Nolan. Wait, he wasn't nominated...

Documentary Feature - Inside Job *The only one I had heard of prior to the show was Exit Through the Gift Shop and only because I used to have a graffiti phobia

Documentary Short Budget - Stranger's No More *I need to see this...

Film Editing - The Social Network *meh, I can't argue with this one

Foreign Language Film - In a Better World *I didn't guess this one correctly, but now i want to see this movie!

Makeup - Wolfman *CALLED IT! When I saw this movie I thought the makeup was spectacular. I loved the look of the wolf. Best Wolf I have seen.

Music Original Score - The Social Network *I was shocked by this at first. Inception score was phenomenal (and I promise I'm not just saying that because i am a huge fan...) Now that the show is over, I can somewhat see the reasoning behind choosing The Social Network.

Music Original Song - Toy Story 3 "We Belong Together" *I was actually rooting for Country Strong's "Coming Home". I was not rooting AGAINST Toy Story 3 at this awards show, as it may seem, but I just felt like it and The King's Speech were such obvious winners of..well..everything.

Short Film (Animated) - The Lost Thing *NO! WHY NOT DAY AND NIGHT!? WHY! NOT!

Short Film (Live Action) - God of Love *Note to self: Watch all of the nominations.

Sound Editing - Inception *ahem...DAMN RIGHT.

Sound Mixing - Inception *oooo Salt was nominated! Too bad it had to go against THE JUGGERNAUT THAT OWNS MY SOUL. I LOVE INCEPTION.

Visual Effects - Inception *to be honest, I totally did not call this one. BUT, DAMN RIGHT

Writing (Adapted Screenplay) - The Social Network *duh, duh, duh

Writing (original screenplay) - The King's Speech *I DISAGREE, SIR.

Anyway, amazing show. I wonder what will be nominated for next year. Since I feel like 2011 is not that great of a year for movies (at all) there really is nothing I feel is Oscar worthy. I'm sure I could be potentially just missing some movies and that there has to be something that will be great for that show, but I feel that the few movies that I do think are worthy are too soon in the year to be considered [i.e. Water For Elephants] Its incredibly difficult for live action films to be considered if they are not from the summer to the end of the year. Water for Elephants is in April if i'm not mistaken.

The animated movies this year do not compare to How To Train Your Dragon and Toy Story 3. Rango seems like it will be hilarious as does Rio. I am thinking that Disney will probably take that award again next year with Winnie the Pooh.

Is Pokemon animal cruelty?

My short answer would be no.

My long answer is this:
Animal cruelty is a horrible act of not caring for an animal, specifically pets. Especially intentionally doing something to harm these animals. I have seen cases whether on the news or via other sources of animals nearly starved to death or chains so tight around their neck that its digging into their skin - ripping apart their fur and meat. I've seen cases of animals with sores covering their bodies. Cases where their ribs were showing due to starvation.

Comparing Pokemon to cases like this is not only ludicrous, but down right insulting and undermining the very REAL cases of people not caring for their pets or viciously harming animals. Pokemon is a fun, fictional game where the Pokemon are meant to be trained and battled. Trainers can do this any way they please, but there really is not a way to intentionally harm these pokemon.

If a person does not want a Pokemon, they can trade it or even release it into the wild. Pokemon are not necessarily tamed creatures: they're wild animals. They can get released into the wild and pretty much take care of theirselves. (what super powered dog, cat, or other realistic animal do you see shooting fire or calling down lightning?)

My training method does seem a bit harsh. I will take my lead Pokemon and train him until the PP of all his/her moves are out or until he/she faints. Then I switch to the next. I continue until my last Pokemon before going to the Pokemon Center.

But this is the game. This is the gameplay. This is how you train and get better. If you don't then the game does not progress. So how can it be compared to animal cruelty? It's quite ridiculous.

I never really agree when people have one Pokemon as an HM slave, however.

I honestly and genuinely love some of my Pokemon. I really miss my former Articuno, Dialga, and Jirachi. And its not some virtual love loss either. It's the loss of having cultivated these Pokemon to be what they were and having actually grown close to them over the course of the respective games they were in. I wish I still had each of those games (im really bad at keeping up with my Gameboy and DS games...) so I could visit those former Pokemon for awhile. I'm very excited about forming bonds with my new Pokemon in Black/White and really wish I hadn't lost my copy of SoulSilver so I can trade them over. I am also playing Platinum right now and can not wait to watch the pokemon in this game grow as well.

As a Pokemon trainer (yep, I totally call myself that), I know that training my Pokemon is what I must do in order to watch them grow and that its not cruel for me to do this.

protect your network: Summer Wars reaction!

Watching this movie was something of an accident, atleast the way I found it was.

It doesn't take much to atleast interest me to check something out. I saw someone cosplay from this movie while looking at Katsucon pictures and then a friend tweeted that he had brought the movie at a convention. Then, my coworker asked someone to go buy his copy of the movie. By the time I got to Best Buy to buy a copy for myself, there was only one left. I was intrigued.

I am SO glad I brought this movie.

Summer Wars is about a girl, Natsuki, hiring Keiji to be her pretend fiance at what appears to be a family celebration for the 90th birthday of her grandmother. There is a large, virtual world called Oz which is pretty much runs everything since everyone is online and connected to it in some way. To not spoil too much, Oz goes haywire and cause many MANY problems.

I am quite unnerved that the review I happened upon while preparing to write this reviewed the movie a bit.negatively. the movie was STUNNING - a visual symphony. Especially Oz, but even the real world was animated very well in my opinion. The story had me captivated from beginning to end as it begin to evolve besides its preliminary simple plot. It begin to encompass more then just Keiji and showed the dire situation they were in. The movie rarely left the house or Oz, but the two settings provided enough to keep me interested the entire time.

Many think Keiji took a backseat as the main character. I feel like this is true, but also that it evolved into something far greater then him. It's also such an assumption that Keiji was the "main" character. Sure the movie followed him a bit more then others, but even the DVD boxart doesn't have Keiji front and center. It has him standing with the others and off to the side. This movie is more then just main characters and sub characters. It's about embracing unity and working together.

I can not wait to watch this film over and over - also can't wait to get mg paws on the special features. I'm so happy that I watched this movie!

dangerous shopping - browsing DVD section at Best Buy

Before I started my dreaded hours of retail work, I popped into Best Buy to see what DVDs or Blu Rays they got on the shelves. I'm still one of those people that enjoy hard copies of...pretty much anything. It this digital age a lot of people house to download everything that they want or need. I still love to peruse the shelves, excitedly grabbing something and rushing it off to the cash register.

There were several DVDs that I will be attempting to get in the next few weeks. I tend to only buy movies that I have already seen - as to not waste money as I have done in the past. Sometimes i'll grab something I havent seen based on reviews.

Even though my focus should be on Disney movies for my upcoming marathon, I think I need these

-All Star Superman which looks absolutely amazing.

-Summer Wars, an anime movie that seems intriguing to me

-Let Me In which is on sale for 9 bucks! I reviewed this movie and I enjoyed it so much!

So, I hope to grab those soon. I also have wanted the Ouran High School Host Club boxset since I saw the series years ago. Hopefully i'll find it somewhere cheap one day.

i Am Number Four - review with slight spoilers

With all the remakes and reimaginings and sequels and prequels, the industry is becoming saturated with original content that has existed in some form or another.

And with that, I recently saw I Am Number Four, a movie adapted from a book written by Pittacus Lore. I went into this movie blind as sometimes I do on purpose, having not read its source material.

Number Four was, in short, a well-rounded movie that could potentially appeal to all different age groups - as many young adult movies and novels tend to do.

The story is quite simple. John Smith (played by Alex Pettyfer who also stars in next months Beastly as, er, the "Beast") moves around a lot with his guardian Henri who is played by The Crazies Timothy Olyphant. Basically, hunky John is an alien. Him and nine others are being hunted down by an alien species and being murdered, in order. John is, obviously, number four.

There was not much that bothered me at all about the movie as it was highly enjoyable and kept me invested the entire time. There was something for everyone whether it be John without his shirt on (which happened very often and could have happened way more in my opinion) or the crazy action sequences that were intense. The movie had its heartwarming moments that made you Aww and the heartwrenching moments that made you cringe.

The one fault in the movie, despite how rounded it indeed was, was how apparent it seemed that the book needed to read. The movie glosses over something that were probably expanded on in book form. The key thing that bugged me was the reconciliation of John and his rival, football star Mark. Out of nowhere, at the end of the movie, Mark helps John and it was so jarring and made no sense, especially where we last saw Mark. Anything that can pull me out of a movie that I had been so into for the entire running time is certainly not good. Apparently, from what I know of the book, there was something that led to them making amends, but the movie did not even hint at that.

Despite that, the movie was pretty good and has me excited to read the book. It is definently worth checking out if you like young adult action mixed with drama but there was a certain lack of "sci fi" in it except for the glossed over alien parts. Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.7

how important *is* that gamerscore

-so, what's you're gamerscore?
-...around 500
-*blank stare*

So, yeah, my Xbox gamerscore is "low". I find myself launching into reasons as to why its low when people ask about it. I've had my Xbox Elite for about a year. Before that I had an Xbox that I "lost" in a breakup (i got the Wii instead). I play my Wii, DS, and PSP way more then my Xbox because the games are a bit cheaper and I'm on a budget.

I just recently got PS3 and I do not feel some immense pressure to get trophies. But I feel like I need to get achievements...

This is probably starting to make games a little less fun for me. I rather like playing my other consoles and don't want to ditch playing them or buying games for then because I opt to get a 360 game. I'm sure noone else does this, however, and I'm just being overdramatic as usual.

The next games I probably get will not even be on the 360. Pokemon Black/White is for the DS and Dissidia 012 is for the PSP.

Personally, I don't think your gamerscore is an accurate account of whether you're a "good" gamer or even a dedicated one. Across the web some people say they won't play with someone that has a low gamerscore but you don't really know the backstory to why its that way...and you don't NEED to know. It's not important.

Your high score could mean a lack of a social life, but I don't judge you on that now do I ;)

Disney troubles D:

It's going to be a bit harder to do my Disney marathon then I thought. I'm glad I started planning rather early so that I can figure it all out.

After going through our dvds, VHS and Blu Rays, I see that we own only 20 out of 50 movies. My initial plans were to buy all the movies, but that would be incredible expensive.

Second plan was to buy atleast 10 that I actually do want to own and then rent the other 20 via Netflix and my local rental store. This is still my plan although i canceled Netflix for the time being. I will restart my Netflix when I get some decent internet in my own house, but for the time being it will be remain cancelled.

I may resign up just for this Disney marathon if it becomes too difficult to get the other movies. There are some that I would absolutely love to own and then others that I - honestly - do not care to own. So I do not see owning something like Fantasia (unfortunately) but would LOVE Oliver and Company.

I'm glad we have atleast 20 out of 50 (our of 49 really since Tangeled is not out yet). I priced some at Best Buy and most of them still go for $20. I definently need to find a cheaper way of owning them that does not mean downloading them. No way would I download my beloved Disney films!

The marathon WILL HAPPEN. I am too excited about it to not go through with it.

50 Disney Movies in a Month

My family goes to Disney as much as we can. Last time we visited the happiest place on Earth (and, might I add, one of my personal favorite places on this planet) was in 2007. Our next scheduled trip is in April of this year. I'm excited and can't wait to return there.

I'm a Disney fan through and through. Grew up watching all the movies and love every bit of it. We still have home movies of past Disney trips that we watch, remembering the times when we were young and enjoying what the park had to offer us.

Tangled was the 50th animated movie for Disney to release (not counting any sequeals and such). I'm amazed at this feat and very happy about it. This is just a testament to one of my true fandoms. the dvd for Tangled comes out March 29th and I've came up with this rather fanatic idea, to watch all 50 movies in a month. Now I could actually start this in March and celebrate watching the 50th on the 29th when I buy Tangled. But I think I want to allow our Disney vacation in April to be the crowning star on my marathon. Or perhaps maybe do a 50 day marathon if I can time it to end the day before our vacation. I would blog about the movies every day. This just seems like its going to be so fun!

My only thing is getting all the movies. We have A LOT of Disney movies on dvd and Blu-ray, but we unfortunately do not own all 50. I am going to start buying some that we don't have in preparation for the marathon, but some may be difficult to get or have been returned to the vault meaning they are uber expensive on eBay or such.

I'll make a list of the Disney movies we own tomorrow to better prepare myself on my hunt for the movies. Some may have to be rented from various sources (Netflix, movie rental store) so I'm able to have them for the marathon.

VERY EXCITED! It's an easy marathon to have, especially if I only have to watch a movie a day and the movies average about 90 minutes or shorter. I'm ready to start this, but certainly must collect the movies first and want Disney to be the end result! Maybe I should do a video as well. A brief sentence or two about the movie I watched.

I have a lot on my plate already but would love to do this.

Best (and worse?) of Superbowl 2011

To say I'm not interested in the game and just watch the commercials to appease those who hate football is not truth at all. I LOVE FOOTBALL. This was a really good game - too many turn overs however. Neither of the teams are any I am a fan of so congratulations Green Bay on the win!

The halftime show was the best I've seen in awhile despite Fergie's performance. I absolutely loved Usher, but didn't like the Tron vibe of the entire thing. Where were the light cycles when you needed them?!

But this is a movie-ish blog so let's talk about the commercials and trailers that were shown.

As far as commercials, I did not really enjoy any of them. None sticks in my mind at all and I keep feeling like I missed something as people talk about the commercials. The Volkswagen Star Wars commercial was one I already saw and has been making the rounds on the internet before the Bowl so it did not wow me last night.

I watched a Pepsi commercial about a Black couple with the woman semi-abusing her significant other who then checks out a white woman at the end. The Black Woman then throws a Pepsi can that knocks the woman out. (commercial is named Love Hurts on YouTube). This one seemed to have some subliminal messages that I didn't care for.

The Chrysler commercial with Eminen caught my attention. 1. I love Chrysler. 2. I love Eminen. 3. I LOVE "LOSE YOURSELF"

I remember every trailer that was played of course. They were basically what I waited around on commercial break for. I was surprised and excited to see a Super 8 trailer that was a little more then a teaser. I love monster movies and Super 8 seems like its shaping up to be a great movie to watch.

Thor continued to not impress me while Captain America was only So-so. I want to see both, but Marvel needs to step their marketing game up to get me hype it seems. I still want a dose of Green Lantern in my summer movies moreso then the Marvel properties.

Cowboys and Aliens looked even MORE fantastic. But, what can I say, I love alien movies (except Skyline...) Pirates 4 is just So-so to me as well. I never wanted my beloved movies to get a fourth movie but since Disney wants to continue with it i'll watch it like a loyal fan.

All in all, slightly disappointed by the commercials and the trailers were only ok with Super 8 being my only surprise. The game, despite what people say, was way better then the commercials. Commercials are meant to sell and perhaps be entertaining. There was just a lot of poorly thought out ideas that did not grab my attention.

...although I do seem to desire a new car after last night...

Exorcism never looked so real: The Rite

Forget all those other movies you've seen about demonic possession. They're probably very fake looking compared to The Rite.

I had the choice of seeing two movies this past weekend and chose The Rite without really researching what i was getting myself into.

Inspired by true events, The Rite follows Michael Kovac (Colin O'Donoghue), a seminary student and son of a mortician who reluctantly attends Exorcism school at The Vatican. At this school he questions everything and anything holy and is eventually sent to watch Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) perform unorthodox methods of Exorcism.

The first thing I noticed about this movie is quick ironic for the subject matter - the movie was beautiful. The scenery - from the prestine Vatican to Lucas' slum house - was just magnificent and captivating. Every camera angle caught something brilliant.

But, most importantly, was the fact that this movie scared the Crap out of me. Whether you are a true believer or not, the movie makes everything seem so real. The possessions are some of the most realistic I have ever seen in a movie. You do not get heads spinning or projectile vomiting, but that just makes it all the more powerful and real. Because of this the movie was scary regardless of your faith.

Kovac has us questioning everything right along with him and at the penultimate moment we are right there for him, believing. I did not feel it necessary the way we arrived at that moment, with Kovac experiencing hallucinations, because i felt it contradicted some of the other 'facts' the movie put out there, but the actor was so superb that i can ignore that.

I'm glad I saw The Rite despite cringing in my seat and grabbing my date's hand. It was an excellent movie.

Top 10 Lists

A user on a thread I frequent asked what our favorite fandoms are. Everyone started naming their favorite of all time which had be feeling a tad left out - mainly because I named the series I was into right now. So I decided to make a list here of my favorite anime, favorite manga, favorite movies, and favorite video game franchises.

FAVORITE ANIME
I have been into anime since elementary school, roughly fifteen years at this point. My favorites rarely change except to possibly add a new one. I attempt to put them in order, but I am only REALLY sure of my absolute favorite anime, while the others are equally get my love.

it works! MAGIC!

I know I typical review all manners of geekiness, but I think product reviews are in order!

This morning i was painting a staff for a costume (Litchi from Blazblue) and I washed the paintbrushes in the bathtub. Of course this was blatant stupidity on my part but i wanted a large rush of water to quickly wash the paint as I needed the brush for another color.

And, yep, it stained the bathtub. Horribly.

In a panic, I turned to Twitter - my favorite tool for quickly solving problems. And my followers helped immensely.

One suggested I used 90% rubbing alcohol but, alas, we only had 70% in the house. Another suggested Mr Clean Magic Eraser. I had never used this product, but decided that I would run to a local store and pick it up quickly.

For two eraser it was about $2.43 at Family Dollar. I rushed back home and begin to use it on the tub. I IMMEDIATELY saw results.

It was awesome.

It only took about 5-10 minutes to clean the tub. I am so psyched that I just needed to write about this! My only problem is that it seems I am going to need to throw this particular eraser away despite the product saying it can be used multiple times. I think I was rubbing a bit hard though.

So, yeah, this thing is amazing. Going to use it for cleaning more often.

Freezing - Winter 2011 anime

After completely forgetting that January means new.anime, I necked out the lineup and did not find many interesting shows as I did the last season. Nothing really caught my eye like the three anime I watched last season (Panty and Stocking, Star Driver, and Samurai Girls) or the two I watched the season before that (High-school of the Dead and Sengoku Basara 2).

I decided to check out two anime: Level E and Freezing. Also, still waiting for Supernatural anime.

I watched Freezing episode one last night. It seems I have some mysterious power to choose fanservice anime. And I rather like that power thank you very much.

Freezing is typical fanservice on its first layer. Lots of panty shots with clothes being ripped out women to the point where even their breasts are out (and not censored). Of course the ladies act embarrassed whenever a guy sees all their goodies.

The second layer of Freezing tries to pretend the fanservice isn't going on. The first episode sets up a very complex, serious story. The women are called Pandora and, with the help of a younger male called a Limiter, they fight giant creatures called Nova. Someone always seems to die during these fights, or so a character says while explaining everything. As characters explain every single aspect of this anime it is paired with action.

The third layer seems to be some sadistic tournament called Carnival between the Pandora girls in the school. It's...really graphic and bloody.

There are more layers in this anime and that's what makes me want to keep watching. Don't get me wrong, Freezing is pretty standard for an anime trying to have quite a bit of fanservice with a story staged, but that's one of the genres that keep me watching.

If you're not put off by excessive fanservice and violence then Freezing is worth checking out.

It's Raining Bullets - Bulletstorm demo is HOT

Finally got my hands on something I have been anticipating for quite some time: Bulletstorm.

Shooters have been losing their violent little charm for me (probably for more personal reasons then the games theirselves). I have not seriously played a shooter since Gears of War 2. Bulletstorm just looked more promising then any other shooter that has come out.

And the title. It caught my attention.

After playing the demo (which has a seriously awesome and high replay value for just a demo), I will certainly be purchasing this game on day one. The encouragement of killing with skill and creativity allows for more variety then the focus on getting the most headshots that other games shove in our faces. I only managed to do the two creative kills that the tutorial showed me which brings me to my only beef wig Bulletstorm.

It is quite tedious to set up the kills, especially with a storm of bullets flying at you (see what I did there?). You have to think quickly on your feet so you can rack up points. This game is going to take some practice. I thought I can just pick up the controller and go at it, but that certainly was not the case.

I can not wait to pick this game up and play against my friends. February 22nd needs to hurry up.

What I Like (and don't like) about Netflix

When I was dating a guy I had my first run in with Netflix. He and his roommates each had subscriptions to the service. They would get dvds in the mail and also stream it on their game consoles. It was interesting to say the least, having the stuff that was instantly available to watch. We spent quite a lot of time browsing what we could watch, but, to be honest, I don't really reccall us watching much through Netflix. We still watched mainly actually dvds, went to the theatres, and burned stuff we wanted to watch.

I did a free month trial of Netflix after much debate. Some people just boast like its the greatest thing since sliced bread so I checked it out.

Streaming was a mess, atleast on my wonky internet service, which is more my fault then Netflix. But the ability to stream movies is probably what makes Netflix as "amazing" as most people claim. After trying to stream a movie constantly - and it failing - I decided to do the mail service.

I do like the speed in which I get dvds. I send one back and it takes maybe a day to get the next in my quene. Most of the movies I've watched so far are movies that I probably could've brought on dvd because I would like to rewatch them. Yes, that would've been more expensive, but atleast I would have had them in my possession. I do have a tv series in my quene next, but getting one dvd at a time is going to take forever to finish the ten season long television show. I also do not think the show is available to watch instantly (i could be mistaken but since I personally can't watch anything instantly anyway then it doesn't benefit me)

Netflix is like ten bucks a month though so that's the best thing about it. Countless movie rentals for very cheap. I used to go to the movie rental place and get maybe 5 movies, all due back in like 2 days. It was pricy and I always had a late fee.
Red Box, a movie sentai vending machine, is also something I like to use. For a dollar I can rent a movie for a day. I think its just as good as Netflix, especially when if has movies ON their dvd release date whereas it takes Netflix so long to get the movie (a month or more).

All in all, I may cancel my Netflix service. It doesn't really benefit ME personally although others have great success with it. I just don't like when people have this holier then thou attitude about the service. It isn't a perfect movie service. What happens when I really want to watch something but it isn't available at that moment to watch instantly on Netflix (it has happened despite what all you want to think). If I have a dvd or blu ray, I know its there and I can just pop it in. Instant Netflix, to me, seems just like my movie channels on my cable provider. I can peruse what is up there but if isnt there I'm shit outta luck.

I do still love having a physical copy that is MINE and I can always then to to watch. I don't think netflix will completely take over movies and how we view them until it somehow perfects its service - which is kind of impossible. Out of the movies I have viewed through my time with netflix, I am going to buy the physical dvd of the majority of them.

I guess it is all a manner of personal preference and what a person likes. If theyre patient about their movies and not easily disappointed (or just damn cheap), the Netflix is pretty good - especially with decent internet. If they're like me and want the ability to go to my shelf and grab a dvd, having them proudly displayed like a testament to my movie geekiness, then Netflix is only a So-so service that is good to have but not the end all be all of movies.

Show me some Skin part two

Decided to list a comparison of the two of what I liked and didn't like:

-UK Tony was cuter then American Tony. He also had more of a manipulative look about him. I heard that American Tony is 18 but he looked way younger then that, almost around the age of 14. Again, American Tony lacked the personality to fill the role of Tony.

-Michelle was probably the only character that was pretty dead on, atleast for this first episode. American Michelle is prettier then the UK one.

- Stanley was a huge disappointment since Sid was my favorite character. Stanley came off as a little creepy, like the guy noone wants to be around. Sid was just an adorable, awkward kid.

-this Katie character that is supposed to be replacing Cassie is completely different from Cassie, who reminded me of Luna from Harry Potter. I'm not sure I like Katie at all.

-the other four characters aren't even really worth mentioning in this first episode...I love their UK versions but we really missed out on seeing some of them in this first episode, at least enough to get a feel for them. Right now they seem like nameless background characters. I do miss Maxxie being male and homosexual. I suppose changing him to female (and a lesbian I think?) Is far "hotter" for American audiences. Maxxie was such a great character that had to deal with some shit, but I will see where they go with this lesbian (?) character.

I already can tell the American show is a bit more censored then the UK version. Not a lot of f-bombs or nudity. I never really thought Skins was appropriate for MTV anyway, despite the give "Mature audiences" bit they put before the beginning of the show. Only time will tell if this show is worth watching, which I shall keep doing until it bores me to death. Here's hoping the show picks up. I do remember thinking the same about the UK version so maybe I will grow to love this one as well.

Show Me Some Skin: American version of Skins lacks "charm"

Perhaps I ruined it by watching the UK version last week, but the American adaption of the British show, Skins, is not very appealing at all - even though its almost identical to the UK show.

Maybe its the actors and actresses chosen for the show or maybe its how forced everything seems, but the show is certainly trying to hard to live up to the adaption. And it shows.

It would be harsh to place it solely on the shoulders of the young "stars" (the word used very loosely) but they are the ones on screen and their performances are quite so-so. they lack a certain personality that is needed to play the roles of their characters.

Perhaps when the show deviate from its UK predecessor, as it has been rumored to do, it will get better. Maybe they grow into their roles as the season goes on. Something NEEDS to happen because its a bit dull right now.

Speaking of UK to US adaptions, Being Human also premiered tonight and it was a far more appealing adaption.

Getting Stung: Green Hornet starts 2011 Right

Seth Rogen is a funny guy. Even with plaster and bullets flying around him there is still hilarity - never a dull moment with that guy. And even while kicking much ass, flipping over criminals heads, and punching them in the jaw, Jay Chou can be a funny guy himself.

After seeing the Green Hornet trailer attached to nearly every movie in late 2010 and the quite comical Hardees commercial featuring the two masked vigilantes, January 14 did not seem to be getting here fast enough. Finally, Green Hornet was in theatres and the movie did not disappoint.

The movie was pure fun. If you're looking for some deep movie with multiple layers, complex characters, and twists woven through out...then this isn't the movie for you. But if you're looking for - to quote Seth's character Britt Reid - "balls to the wall" action, hilarious dialogue, and brilliant coreographed fight scenes then please go see Green Hornet. It's amazing.
