Sucker Punch Animated Shorts - Move Over Animatrix...or not!

Instead of linking all three of these my Facebook page (and continuously spamming everyone that has friended me over there), I compiled all three animated shorts into this blog entry. Now I can talk about them as well as drool over them.

Three animated shorts have popped up today to accompany Sucker Punch, which releases tomorrow March the 25th.

While the source where I found the shorts recommends them for viewing after the movie, I could not help but to view them prior. I, of course, am ready for my Sucker Punch fix despite all the grueling and horrible reviews floating around about it. After waiting on a movie for a year or so, I will watch everything pertaining to it and defend it in anyway possible.

After watching the three shorts, I don't think viewing the movie first is absolutely necessary. If you've seen the trailer a couple of times (or a couple hundred like myself) then each of these shorts adds to familiar elements that are in the trailers. They do not spoil anything about the plot - or lack thereof according to reviewers - about the movie. If anything, they just try to add on to the portions of the movie and may enhance the viewing of it, considering these little back stories will not be in the feature length film.

Each short takes place in a different level of Baby Doll's mind - ala Inception, but probably not as good. Having not seen the movie as of yet, I am unsure if the level of her imagination (minus the Brothel of course) is the correct order the videos are in, but I managed to put them in the order other sources have them in.

Animatrix is one of my favorite things on this planet! It was such a successful addition to the Matrix trilogy and is better to me then one of the movies in the trilogy. Animatrix utilized different directors and art forms for the majority of its animation which is something these Sucker Punch shorts did not do, but I really enjoyed this shorts. I think they all evoked the same emotion from me and were more similar then they are different, which does not put it on the level of the Animatrix as an animated accompaniment to a film. I found them enjoyable nonetheless.

the "G" word

During my creative writing courses in college, we weren't able to say or write the "G" word.
Genre.

No matter how my distinguished professors viewed genre, it exists far more then anything when it comes to entertainment. This must fall into a certain category and individuals choose which category they like the most. Or love.

With fiction, I typically write fantasy. I choose to read young adult. With fanfiction, I always just read smut for some odd reason.

With movies, however, I only want to see action movies in the theatre. I do not know why, but I will rush to the theatre to see something action related. Perhaps they hold my attention more then any other genre. And when sitting in a theatre for hours, you definently want something that is going to keep your butt in the seat.

This morning I had a sudden realization of another genre I am particular fond of. Psychological films. I love for a movie to toy with my mind, twist so that I have no idea what is going on in the film. I like when risks are taken with the movie - where the story does not necessarily have to be linear for me to enjoy it. I love in media res. I love flashbacks. I love foreshadowing. I love all these elements that confuse audiences or warrent multiple viewings for people to completely grasp the entirety of the concept of the movie.

I watched Vanilla Sky for the first time this morning. I was blown away with how into the movie I was, unable to discern what was truly going on. When the revelation happened at the end, i wasn't disappointed and it also wasn't something i could have guessed from the previous events in the movie. I loved the film and vs not believe it took me so long to finally watch it.

So the G word leads me to other movies that I will probably love. It certainly makes it easier to wade through all the movies that exist.

Coming Soon 3/11 - Red Riding Hood, Mars Needs Moms, Battle:LA

Photobucket

This weekend we have three movies, two about aliens and one about the color red.

Red Riding Hood stars Amanda Seyfield and Gary Oldman and appears to be a gritty, dark, and twisted version of the classic fairy tale. From the trailer, the movie seems absolute gorgeous in my opinion. I love the usage of the "red hood", how it is always the brightest color and juxtaposed against the surrounds - especially the snow scene where it is a brilliant red spot and almost symbolizing a loss of purity. The movie seems to be taking on the sexual awakening analysis of the old story and throws in the werewolf. The trailer seems a hodge podge of about three storylines and I'm interested to see how they merge together.

Mars Needs Mom is a Disney movie with Seth Green voicing Milo, a young boy who must save his mother who has been abducted by aliens to raise Martian children. This animated film is going to have to compete against Rango, which released last weekend, and seems to be a pretty hilarious and standard Disney movie. It seems quite entertaining and would be perfect to take children to see.

Battle:Los Angeles is a movie I have wanted to see for a very long time, ever since I first saw a teaser trailer. Alien invasion movies are some of my favorite to see and Battle:La's trailer is really good for a trailer. The concept is, of course, simple. Aliens are attacking Earth to steal it's resources and will destroy all human kind to do so. Michelle Rodriguez is in the film and I am a huge fan of hers. Explosive and riveting, Battle:LA is sure to be better then the last alien invasion film, Skyline, which was highly disappointing. Whether humans win or lose, Battle:LA is a must see this weekend.

Here is an interview from Attack of the Show with Rodriguez. She is certainly a very intelligent woman and talented actress.

Coming This Weekend - Beastly, The Adjustment Bureau

A new segment here on The Cinema Diva will be choosing a movie that releases each weekend...and talking about what I think about it. It will typically be a movie that I see incessantly advertised on the television and such.

One such movie is the one I will be discussing today - Beastly.

I first saw the trailer for Beastly sometime last year. This modern day Beauty and the Beast tale was, well, not really catching my attention. I get the concept and I love when people put twists on old stories that I love (that even influences my own writing a majority of the time), but the trailer was not really catching my attention like it probably should have. The entire thing seemed a bit cliche and predictable. The above trailer has the movie releasing this summer, but, as we know, it release March 4. Perhaps those high in the cinema food chain knew this movie would not be able to go against other summer juggernauts.

The more I watch the trailer, the more the movie tends to grow on me. I can not see myself going to actually pay to see this movie, but it is certainly something that I will probably check out in the future - possibly becoming one of those romance guilty pleasures I normally have.

So, I will pass on seeing this in the theaters, but can not wait for a DVD.

Another movie releasing March 4 is The Adjustment Bureau. This is more my speed when it comes to what I watch in theaters. The only thing I don't seem to like from the trailer is the little love story that seems to be going on. Why do movies always have to throw in a sub plot? This movie is way more deeper then that (or so I have observed from the trailer) and Matt Damon should be more worried about these bad ass guys in fedoras then some girl. The Adjustment Bureau seems like it will be attempting to get audiences to question their existence and whether something is controlling it - in a literal or theological sense. It also seems like a "What Would You Do" movie - what would you do if you found out about the Bureau? I would question them immensely about my plan although I am sure they would not tell me one word.

Rumor after Rumor - More Dark Knight Returns rumors

I love rumors as much as anyone - the anticipation of whether or not they will come true, the speculation fans can do across the internet, etc. However, too many rumors can ruin a good thing.

Last year The Dark Knight Returns, the ending to Christopher Nolan's amazing Batman trilogy, was announced and slated for a release in 2012. Since then, there have been many rumors concerning what Nolan can possibly do with the series despite that filming does not begin until May. The only solid news anyone has ever received is the title and that Tom Hardy will play Bane while, surprisingly, Anne Hathaway will play either Selina Kyle or Catwoman (NOTE: I could go on and on about how I feel like Hathaway's character is Selina Kyle and not a fully realized Catwoman, but we will save that for another time)

Joesph Gordan Levitt is supposedly going to star in the movie as well. Rumors have spread about who he will be playing ranging from the Riddler to Robin to Alberto Falcone.

Marion Cotillard is now rumored to be playing Talia Al'Ghul who, as we all should know, is the daughter of Raj Al'Ghul - the villain in Batman Begins.

While that last rumor would allow the series to come full circle, it also would make The Dark Knight seem like just an out of place sequel. Nolan is, in my fangirl opinion, an amazing director. But even I think handling four villains in one movie would be incredibly difficult, if they were fully fleshed out characters. Because Nolan would also, of course, have to wrap up story lines of several characters already established in the series.

Until I sit down in a theater chair and start to watch what will hopefully be a magnificent film and wrap up to some of my favorite movies, I will no longer pay attention to all these rumors.
